The Grand Reopening of Atlanta’s Iconic Tara Theatre: A Celebration of Cinema
Posted by Julio Urbay on 13th May 2025
Atlanta's beloved Tara Theatre has officially reopened its doors, marking a triumphant return for one of the city’s most cherished independent cinemas. Located at 2345 Cheshire Bridge Road NE, the Tara Theatre has long been a cornerstone of Atlanta’s film culture, specializing in art house and independent films that captivate audiences with their depth and storytelling.
A Historic Revival
After closing in late 2022, the Tara Theatre’s future seemed uncertain. However, thanks to the dedication of Christopher Escobar, owner of both the Plaza Theatre and now the Tara, along with strong community support, the cinema has been revived. The grand reopening event was a celebration of film history, featuring a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a lineup of classic and contemporary films that paid homage to the theatre’s legacy.
Opening Night Festivities
The grand reopening featured screenings of four films that hold special significance for the Tara Theatre:
- It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) – A nod to the theatre’s early years.
- Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) – A film that first premiered in Atlanta at the Tara Theatre.
- Back to the Future Part II (1989) – A nostalgic favorite for longtime patrons.
- Tár (2022) – The last film screened before the theatre’s closure in 2022.
Guests were treated to guided tours, an unveiling of the names of the four screening rooms—each dedicated to individuals who played a key role in the theatre’s revival—and a heartfelt tribute to the Halpern family, who have supported the theatre for over 50 years.
A New Chapter for Tara Theatre
Now operating as a sister cinema to the Plaza Theatre, the Tara Theatre will continue its tradition of showcasing art house and independent films, ensuring that Atlanta’s film lovers have a dedicated space to experience cinema beyond the mainstream. The theatre’s reopening also coincides with a fundraising campaign, which has successfully raised over $50,000 to support its long-term viability.
Looking Ahead
With a renewed commitment to preserving film culture, the Tara Theatre is set to become a hub for film festivals, special screenings, and community events. Whether you’re a longtime patron or a first-time visitor, the theatre’s revival is a testament to the enduring power of cinema and the passionate community that keeps it alive.
